How SmartMPA Flags a Bad Application Before It's Even Submitted

Post Image

A merchant uploads a bank statement where the account holder's name does not match the business on the application. In a traditional application flow, nobody catches it until an underwriter opens the file days later, and by then the applicant has often moved on to another processor.

SmartMPA is built for real-time application verification, checking documents the moment they are uploaded rather than after the application sits in a queue. Two pieces of that capability are live today: real-time document validation at upload, and OFAC, Better Business Bureau, and prohibited merchant category code checks that run automatically at submission.

What Happens at the Moment a Document Is Uploaded

When a merchant uploads a bank statement or other supporting document into SmartMPA, the document is validated in real time against the data already entered on the application. It is checked immediately, not just stored for someone to review later.

A mismatch between the name on a document and the name on the application gets flagged while the applicant is still filling out the form. At that point it takes seconds to resolve, compared to days once the file has been submitted and queued.

What Real-Time Verification Catches That Later Review Misses

Document fraud is not rare. Inscribe's 2025 network data found that 1 in 16 documents processed were flagged as fraudulent, and 91.2% of flagged documents involved altered financial details, either alone or combined with an identity change.

Bank statements were the document type risk leaders worried about most, cited by 85.6% of respondents as the most vulnerable. A check that only runs after submission reviews that risk once the application is already in the queue, while real-time validation reviews it before the application gets there.

The Checks That Run at Submission

Alongside document validation, SmartMPA runs OFAC sanctions screening, a Better Business Bureau check, and a review against prohibited merchant category codes automatically when an application is submitted.

None of these checks require a separate manual step to start. An application that would ultimately be declined on compliance grounds gets flagged before it takes up an underwriter's time.

The rest of SmartMPA, including eSignature and multi-director support, is still in development. The document validation and submission checks described here are the parts available now.

Why Catching Problems Early Matters More Now

Document fraud is also getting harder to spot by eye. Inscribe reported that AI-generated document fraud increased fivefold between April and December 2025, and 97.8% of fraud leaders it surveyed said they were concerned about AI-enabled document fraud.

A reviewer scanning a document by hand is working against fraud that is produced faster and looks more convincing than it did a year ago. Catching problems at the point of upload narrows the window that fraud has to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SmartMPA check in real time?

SmartMPA validates uploaded documents against the application data at the moment of upload. It also runs OFAC, Better Business Bureau, and prohibited merchant category code checks automatically when the application is submitted.

Is all of SmartMPA available today?

Real-time document validation at upload and the OFAC, BBB, and prohibited-MCC checks at submission are live. Other parts of SmartMPA, including eSignature and multi-director support, are still in development.

What kinds of document problems does real-time verification catch?

It catches mismatches between the data on a document and the data entered on the application. Bank statements are the document type risk teams flag as most vulnerable, which is why validating them at upload matters.

Why is catching a bad application at upload better than catching it during underwriting?

A problem caught at upload can be fixed by the applicant on the spot or flagged before it reaches an underwriter's queue. A problem caught days later has already used up review time and, in cases of intentional fraud, given the applicant a head start.

Does real-time document validation replace the underwriter?

No. It flags mismatches for a person to review rather than making approval decisions on its own. Underwriters spend their time on applications that need judgment instead of routine document checks.
